Wordle is a web app word game you should be playing right now

OK, so maybe you don’t need to play Wordle right now, but as soon as you’re done reading this article, I highly recommend it. This web app has taken Twitter by storm and for good reason: it is addictive and masterful. We’ll get into the nitty-gritty of the game second, but IMHO the greatest feature of Wordle is the fact that it grabbed all of its attention, praise, and adoration while being simple, accessible to everyone. -a browser web application. Seriously, this is one of the best uses of the power of the open web I’ve seen.

No app stores, no problems

The beauty of Wordle is that it’s playable anywhere: on your Android phone, iPhone, Chromebook, Windows laptop, Mac OS or Linux device. With no real connection to any particular app store or operating system, Wordle exists entirely on the web and you can access it by going to the game’s URL (https://www.powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle /) and correctly start a way. Nothing to install, no ads, nothing annoying. The game’s creator designed it as a fun thing for his crossword-loving partner, and he had this to say about it:

I think people kind of appreciate that there’s this thing online that’s just fun. It doesn’t try to do anything shady with your data or your eyeballs. It’s just a fun game.

Although there are a growing number of clones, mostly in the Apple App Store (there are a few in the Play Store as well) that take simple/awesome gaming and take advantage of ads, it’s worth note that the original game does not have one. of these trends. There’s no signup, no email subscription, and no hook to get you back outside of the brilliance of the game’s premise. It’s a refreshing approach to great mental training every day. and while I’d like to see at least some kind of connection to keep my records, I appreciate the non-invasive approach that Wordle takes.

How Wordle Works

It took me a few minutes to figure it out and it might be for you too, but the premise of the game is simple once you get the hang of it. The game starts with a 5×6 grid and a keyboard at the bottom. The goal is to correctly guess the unique 5-letter word of the day. That’s it. One word every day and you have 6 tries to guess it. It seems nearly impossible until you realize the clues Wordle gives you along the way.

After you type your first guess of 5 letters and hit enter, Wordle will animate your letters and show you which ones aren’t in the word of the day, which ones are actually included in the word, and which ones are in the word and already in the right place. . As you can see in my first two guesses for today, my first guess had the correct ‘R’ but in the wrong place and the second guess had the absolutely correct ‘ROA’ but neither of them at a good place. That’s when I decided to take a break and write this post.

With these guesses, the keyboard below highlights the letters I got right, the letters I got wrong, and any that I haven’t guessed yet. Knowing this, I need to construct a word for my third guess that puts the “R” in the 3rd, 4th, or 5th slot, includes “O” and “A” in new places, and leaves out all those letters gray I ‘I tried. You start to see the strategy at this point and how the guesswork can get a lot more calculated as you go. Oh, and there’s a dark theme and colorblind mode for those of us who need it.

I was able to complete the puzzle yesterday and share my results on Twitter directly from the web app and Wordle even has a great way to view your completed puzzle without spoiling it for others. After all, there’s only one word a day, so we don’t want to deprive anyone of the fun while we brag about being smart enough to complete the game.

As long as you continue to play in the same browser each time, your results will be saved. Clear the cache or play on another device and it doesn’t, but that doesn’t detract from the experience. There’s something a little zen about all of this and at least for now, I’ll be posting my wins on Twitter to track my overall successes and likely failures.

For me, it’s about seeing a simple, creative game delivered to the masses via the open web. Time will tell if Wordle will ever get some sort of monetization, but there’s no doubt that its popularity will grow. Yeah, there will be clones left and right like there were with Flappy Bird, but there’s something great about playing the original, and I know I’ll be doing it every day for the foreseeable future. Wordle is one of those things that makes me love the open web and Chromebooks that are designed to take full advantage of it, and as I said in the opening, it’s high time you headed to the URL game and try it out for yourself.
